Bruce Lee, My Brother

As a young man, Bruce (Aarif Lee) was a rebel who was always engaging in street fights with his buddies, Kong (Zhang Yishan) and Unicorn (Jin Au-yeung), a fellow child actor who would later appear in Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon. Invincible as he is as a street fighter, Bruce’s romantic escapades are not as smooth and successful. He is head over heels in love with Mandy only to realize his mate Kong shares the same passion.

Against his father’s wishes, Bruce studies the Wing Chun martial arts style instead of Tai-chi and tastes his first public triumph at a tournament with his kung-fu skills. On the eve of his triumph, he learns that Kong has become a drug addict and rumbles the drug lord’s den together with Unicorn, rendering him the target of both the triads and corrupted cops who want him in jail.

To save his life, Lee’s father has no choice but to send him off to San Francisco to pursue his studies. And the rest is history…

This movie based upon the book Bruce Lee, My Brother by Robert Lee, Bruce’s youngest brother, directors Raymond Yip and Manfred Wong take us on a journey that’s begging to be made about the life and times of the formative, growing up years of Lee Jun Fan / Lee Sai Feng (Phoenix). It doesn’t need to encroach into the territory that Rob Cohen’s Dragon had already touched on, the Hollywood film done some 17 years back with Jason Scott Lee (of no relations) in the leading role that begins from his teenage and adult years in the USA, Jeet Kune Do, Kato, Fist of Fury and all. Instead this film takes a more nostalgic look back from the 40s to 60s Hong Kong, focusing on the somewhat wayward youth and teen actor prior to being “exiled” by his dad to the US for his own protection, and the rest, as they say, is history.
