10 Items or Less
The film opens with Morgan Freeman - playing an unnamed movie star remarkably like Morgan Freeman - being driven to a rundown supermarket somewhere in Los Angeles to do research on an upcoming role. The driver agrees to pick him up in an hour - only he doesn't show up, and He (our Movie Star) finds himself stranded. His status means he is used to being pampered; now, with a new, unprogrammed cell phone, he discovers that he doesn't even know his own home phone number. In need of a ride, He turns to Scarlet.

Scarlet (Paz Vega) is a crackerjack cashier who can calculate the total price of a basketful of groceries in her head and always knows who is doing what to whom, and in which aisle. He needs her help to get home and she finally caves but not before making sure He knows she has other things to do along the way.

The rest of their day transforms into an inspired buddy movie, one of the finest in recent years. He and Scarlet become tangled up in each others' lives but, more importantly, they challenge each other about their choices, values and dreams for the future. Written and directed by Brad Silberling, 10 Items or Less also has fascinating strands of piquant commentary on the pros and cons of celebrity culture: Freeman's character freely uses his recognition factor to gain unparalleled access to anything and everything, but Scarlet has the pleasure of introducing Him to the joys of treasure hunting at Target.
