Zoolander
Review (-/10)
(By Garth Franklin)

Dumb comedy - when its at its worst we get crap like "Dumb and Dumber" and at its best some really great flicks like "There's Something About Mary". "Zoolander" is somewhere slightly above the middle, its a surprisingly good comedy, the lacklustre script helped along by some great comic talent, a fast pace and flashy stylistic looks which show off Stiller's quite good directing skills.

Stiller himself is the weakest element, not because of the actor but the character looks and sounds a lot like 'The Cable Guy'. He's ok but pales compared to Wilson whose great fun, Taylor as a better tha usual love interest, Jerry Stiller doing his usual schtick in wild outfits, Jovovich in some wild face makeup as well as full Xenia Onatopp mode, and the real standout of the cast - Will Ferrell as the poodle haired over the top Bondian-style villain.

The gags are kind of odd - at times a few 'dumb model' gags don't work such as a vacuum sealed hand joke revolving around David Duchovny's cameo as well as scenes with the Zoolander family, at others there's some scenes so ridiculously stupid its hysterical such as the petrol scene with Derek's roommates, a funny homage to "2001", and a just plain goofy orgy sequence. The cameos occur throughout and this must set a new record as it includes celebs from various fields. Billy Zane, David Bowie, Natalie Portman and Steve Kmetko all get some great lines in. There's also fun pure visual flashes of the likes of Garry Shandling, Lance Bass, Fred Durst, Donald Trump, Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lenny Kravitz, Fabio, Lil Kim, etc.

The plot leaves a little to be desired, the assassination of Malaysia's Prime Minister storyline would've worked much better had the country been fictional. Still, the film shouldn't be dismissed. Stiller has created a broad comedy which makes some clever pokes at the fashion industry whilst dressing it up in wild gharish colours and looks which just add to the complete silliness. I still think the trailers/ads stink but thankfully they don't represent the film well.
