Fever Pitch
Review (4/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Fever Pitch is the story of a school teacher-cum-baseball fanatic named Ben (Jimmy Fallon) who just happens to be a fan of a team that hasn't won the World Series since the days when cavemen roamed the earth. And they have done so with such style (see Bill Buckner). Well, along comes a little cutie named Lindsey (Drew Barrymore) who is a highly successful woman in the cutthroat corporate world and the two fall in love and are on a path towards living happily ever after. Unfortunately, they met in the winter when there is no baseball. Once the snow starts to melt and the ground starts to thaw, Lindsey realizes that the love of her life prefers watching men with bats and balls running around a grass field rather than watching her run around the bedroom naked. Of course, this causes problems, Lindsey dumps Ben and Ben is forced to choose between men with balls or a woman with boobs. You can all guess how this one turns out.

I have to say, I went into Fever Pitch with moderate expectations. A nice little romantic comedy, Drew Barrymore, baseball. What more could you ask for? I guess Adam Sandler would have been one thing we could ask for because Jimmy Fallon was a dud. He wasn't funny. Well, maybe once. He had absolutely no chemistry with Barrymore. He just brought the entire film down. And to top it all off, Barrymore, who often looks quite ravishing on the big screen, really didn't do much for the little baseball bat in my pants. I don't know what it was about her, but a few scenes I remember thinking to myself "blah!". And I'm not even that shallow of a person! Okay, who am I kidding, I'm shallow but that is still no excuse for her not looking good.

What else can I say about this movie? It wasn't very funny. Barrymore looked odd. Fallon sucked. I guess watching the baseball was okay. There was one scene with Ben as a young child and they showed Jim Rice and Dennis Eckersley in Red Sox uniforms and that was kind of cool. I guess there were a few scenes where I chuckled a bit and I suppose the ending was sort of cute. But other than that, I can't really think of any reason to rush out to see this movie unless you are a diehard Boston Red Sox fan and you want to bask in the glow of their World Series victory once again.

I have to also mention that I had absolutely no idea, going into this movie, who directed it and I was quite shocked to see the Farrelly brothers named in the credits. I guess I have come to expect more from the guys who brought us Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary. There was not one single risky joke in this movie. No cops drinking urine. No "special" hair gel. Nothing of the sort. Just your average (or below average) romantic comedy that seems to have come fresh off of Hollywood's never ending assembly line. I'm really not even sure that Sandler could have saved th
