Something's Gotta Give
Review (5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Jack Nicholson plays Harry Langer, a 63 year-old playboy type of bachelor who is well-know for dating younger women. His latest fling involves a thirty-something year old cutie named Marin (Amanda Peet) and the movie starts with Harry and Marin going to Marin's mother's house in the Hamptons for a weekend romp in the sack. The mother, Erica (Diane Keaton), unexpectedly shows up at the house with her sister Zoe (Frances McDormand) and the two are surprised to find Marin with the much older man. Shortly after some time in the bedroom with Marin, Harry has a heart attack and must remain at Erica's house, under her watchful eye, until he gets better. Eventually, Harry begins to find himself attracted to the rather uptight Erica, but also finds himself competing for her attention with his 30-something year old hunk of a doctor, Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves).

It was last year around this time that I had one of my most shocking and in some ways, most memorable movies experiences in recent memory. I happened to catch a sneak preview of the movie About Schmidt and was shocked, surprised and stunned after seeing Kathy Bates nude in that movie. I could not get her rolls of flab and flapjack boobs out of my mind for weeks, maybe even months. Well, Something's Gotta Give has a similarly shocking scene, although not nearly the magnitude of the Kathy Bates stunner. Diane Keaton does a completely nude scene. I'm talking tits, bush, the whole package. It is quick and there are two shots of it but it certainly a shocker. Much like I did with the Kathy Bates scene, when I get this movie on DVD, I will be pausing it on that scene to see it fully with my own eyes. I don't know what it is with Nicholson movies and why these ladies agree to do this but maybe all of us horny men out here should be lobbying for Jack to do a movie with Keira Knightley or Britney Spears instead of with Kathy Bates and Diane Keaton. And much like he did in About Schmidt last year, Jack does an ass shot again, although this time, his big, flabby, wrinkled up ass graces the screen for a rather extended period of time. Or at least it seemed like that.

Nevertheless, neither Jack's ass or Diane's entire bosom could do anything to make this movie nothing better than your average, run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. The movie starts out with some really good laughs and some really quality moments, but then maybe a little more than halfway through, it just seems to hit a wall and ends with a bit of a yawn. The whole Harry and Erica romance becomes a bit of a bore. Characters seem to just appear and disappear - McDormand's character is barely seen in the last hour of the movie. The rather stocky Jon Favreau makes a brief appearance as Harry's personal assistant but his impact on the film is miniscule. Jack's character Harry is likeable and funny - he does his best Nicholson trademarks - the eyebrows, the smirk and the witty one-liners - but he really is not all that compelling and at times seems to be sleepwalking through the movie. Diane Keaton does a fine job but I think she might have been miscast in this role. I don't know how Dr. Julian fell for her. She looked old in the movie. I'm not really saying there is anything wrong with old people but I am in my low thirties and I couldn't see myself being interested in Erica even if I was drunk. Maybe someone like an Annette Bening, Jamie Lee Curtis or Diane Lane would have been more appropriate in the role. Don't get me wrong about Keaton's performance - she did a fine job as the divorced playwright, but I fear that Harry and Julian would have went limp as a wet noodle if they would have jumped in the sack with her.

In the end, I will say this about Something's Gotta Give. It starts out with a few good laughs but about an hour in, the movie seemed to lose steam and became your standard, predictable and not all that funny romantic comedy. I didn't find myself warming up to the romances or even really caring about the characters. I will give credit to Diane Keaton for the nude scene. It takes a lot of guts to do such a scene, especially at her age and the condition of her body (which incidentally is really not all that bad for an older woman). As for Jack? Well, I hope he keeps his ass in his pants in future movies. Something's Gotta Give starts out with a lot of potential, but in the end is nothing more than your everyday Hollywood hogwash. I don't even know if this movie would make a good date movie. After seeing Jack's ass and Keaton's everything, sex may be the last thing on your mind.
