The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Review (5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the story of a Englishman named Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman - the guy in Love Actually who was the stand-in for the nude scenes) who befriends a dude, who is actually not a dude, named Ford Prefect (Mos Def). You see, Ford Prefect is actually an alien disguised as a dude and Prefect knows that the world is only minutes away from being destroyed so he grabs Arthur Dent, downs a few pints of beer with him, and hitchhikes his way onto the nearest spaceship, which incidentally, is operated by a band of bureaucratically-anal aliens known as Vogons. Vogons do everything by the book and they also detest hitchhikers so Arthur and Ford are forced to flee the Vogon ship and end up on the spaceship of the president of the galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell). Eventually Arthur, Ford, Beeblebrox, an earthling named Trillian (Zooey Deschanel) and a manic-depressive robot named Marvin (voiced by Alan Rickman) set out on a journey across the galaxy that is full of thrills, spills and yes, even chills, and all this with the Vogons hot on their trail.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a good, clean, satirical movie of sorts, sure to be loved by one and all. Well, one and all except for me and a few others. I just didn't get this movie. I mean, I sort of got it but I really thought I would be much more entertained. Instead, I was sitting in the theatre, hot, tired, a bit bored and just wanting the movie to end. And maybe that's not the movie's fault but I'm pretty sure if I was comfortable, well-rested and interested, I might not have liked this movie much more. Sure, Hitchhiker's had a few laughs, some interesting satirical moments and Zooey Deschanel running around in a pair of men's boxers but I just didn't find any of the characters too intriguing. (Although I did like Bill Nighy's Slartibartfast.) I'm not 100% sure what the exact purpose of this intergalactic journey was, and I just found the movie dragged in a few spots and it wasn't long enough that it should have dragged. In more than one instance, the packed theatre in which I was sitting was eerily quiet, so I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt this way.

I'm not convinced my uncomfortable state contributed to my lack of enjoyment but I have to say, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a bit of a disappointment in the eyes of this hombre. It's probably worth a few chuckles and I'm not sure if the fact that I never read the books had anything to do with it, but from what I saw in the movie theatre yesterday, I consider this movie average at best, and that's probably being a bit generous.
