Hostel: Part 2
Review (3/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Hostel: Part II is pretty much Hostel (part 1) written with three college chicks instead of three college dudes. In Part II, the three girls are preparing to take a weekend trip to Paris (I think) but are lured by a beautiful Eastern Eurorpean lady who convinces them to go to Slovakia instead, where they check into a hostel for the weekend. It is there where the ladies are eventually kidnapped, one by one, and taken to an abandoned factory where rich men pay big money to torture and kill the gals. Two of the men who pay to torture these relatively innocent young ladies might be familiar to television fans out there - one played the weasel on Desperate Housewives who tried to seduce Marcia Cross' character and the other played a weasel on both 24 and Desperate Housewives (Teri Hatcher's character's ex-husband). Yeah, I watch Desperate Housewives, leave me alone.

Anyways, Hotel 2 didn't do it for me. I'm not even sure I can quite put my finger on what it was but I know when I saw the first Hostel movie I thought it wasn't too bad. Maybe because it was unlike anything we had ever seen before. Or maybe because I had no idea what I was getting into when I walked into the theatre. At any rate, this movie was horrific and I'm not saying that in a good way. It just took too long to get going - for those of you who are expecting this movie to be full of blood and guts, it felt like the movie was almost half over before anything happened. The characters were uninteresting. The villains or "supposed" villains were about as scary as a gang of nuns. I didn't even find the torture scenes to be all that good. In fact the whole premise, although it seemed to work in the first movie, just seemed to miss the boat the second time around.

I really couldn't have a clear conscience if I recommended this movie to anyone. I guess if watching people get needlessly tortured, seeing others bathe in blood and witnessing a man getting his hog chopped off is something that you find entertaining, then this movie is perfect for you. I just don't know how anyone in the world can actually find this entertaining.
