The Day the Earth Stood Still

Review (5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" stars Keanu Reeves as an alien who dramatically arrives on Earth with the goal of teaching the human race that they are systematically destroying their own planet. Of course, to do so, the aliens feel the need to land in Central Park in New York City because we all know if they didn't, they may not qualify as "breaking news" on CNN and CNN.com. The alien is rather easily abducted by the U.S. government who proceed to poke and prod at the alien's human body, stick needles in him and hook him up to a lie detector. The alien, Klaatu, is rescued by a beautiful scientist (played by Jennifer Connelly) and her son (played by Jaden Smith also known as Will Smith Jr.), who has the best hair in any movie from 2008. Klaatu, the scientist and the hair flee from the government facility with the army, the police and a bunch of other dopes hot on their heels while Klaatu's friends continue to tear up the entire planet.

I know it's kind of a silly synopsis of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" but I'm not sure what else to say about a somewhat silly and kind of lame movie. I just didn't find this version of "Day" to be all that exciting or exhilarating. In fact, at times, it was pretty boring. It brought nothing new to the alien movie genre and I know it's a remake so you might be wondering "what could a remake possibly bring to the genre?" but I compare it to the 2005 remake of "War of the Worlds". It didn't necessarily bring any new ideas to the genre but at least it was thrilling and had some eye-popping special effects. "Day" had neither.

I'm a fan of Keanu Reeves. I'm secretly in love with Jennifer Connelly. There is nothing either of them could have done to save this movie. I've heard complaints that Keanu was like a zombie in the movie but to be brutally honest, Connelly wasn't much better. To top it off, she didn't even look as hot as she normally looks.

My suggestion would be this - if you really want to see "The Day The Earth Stood Still", wait for the DVD. I know that means that you won't be able to see it in IMAX but I'm not even sure that IMAX can make the movie any better. The most amusing comment I read from someone who saw the movie explained how they felt after seeing it - The Day My Brain Stood Still. I think that says it all.
