Australia

Review (5.5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Australia is certainly one of the longest movies to hit the theatres in 2008 and perhaps so far in this century. At times it is painfully long. Is it even possible to make a 3-hour movie enjoyable in this day and age?

The movie stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman as a pair who meet when Drover (Jackman) is hired as Lady Ashley's (Kidman) tour guide/bodyguard. Despite the recent death of her husband, Lady Ashley still manages to fall in love with Drover. Their courtship is interrupted by a series of violent events, including the Japanese attack on Australia during WWII and also by the attempted takeover of Kidman's family ranch by a ruthless businessman named King Carney. There's a whole lot else going on in this movie, as should be expected from a 3-hour film, but I won't bore you with all the details.

I will tell you that Australia isn't nearly as bad a movie that I'm making it out to be. Yeah, it's long. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I been able to watch it for 1 1/2 hours, take a nap, and then watch it for the other 1 1/2 hours. The length of the movie really made me lose concentration at about the 2-hour mark. I also had a bit of a hard time following parts of the movie and understanding what the little kid who was narrating was saying. I thought Jackman was an interesting and cool enough character. Kidman was annoying (and a horrible runner) throughout, even at the end when I think we were supposed to like her. None of the other characters were terribly compelling except the old grandpa.

Overall, although I wasn't too crazy about Australia, I think under the right circumstances, it could be an okay movie. If you feel compelled to see it, I would suggest waiting for the DVD. It will save you the hassle of having your ass glued to a theatre seat for 3 straight hours. I will also warn that although Australia is a beautifully-shot movie, the story is pretty average and the characters, except for Drover and a very few others, are not too fascinating. Investing three hours to see some great photography and Hugh Jackman take his shirt off a few times may not be worth your while. Proceed with caution.Brendan Cullin
