Religulous

Review (5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

"Religulous" is Bill Maher's attempt to become a Michael Moore-type documentary filmmaker. He fails.

In the movie, Maher tackles the topic of religion and tries to tear apart everyone and everything associated with it, from The Vactican in Rome to the guy who plays Jesus at the Christian version of Disneyland. He does so in his typical snarky, condescending way that he became famous for on that television show he used to do. Believe you me, I know that there are some horrible people involved in religion, people who exploit it and use it for their own purposes, whether it be waging war or making money. It is a horrible, horrible thing. But having Bill Maher sit there and take a shit (not literally) all over The Vatican or snicker at some shop owner who believes he encountered a miracle is not my idea of entertainment. Maybe Bill should have focussed more on the preacher with the $2000 designer suit who tells people to give him their money. He could have thrown in a segment on that kook Benny Hinn, who plays to sold out stadiums around the world filled with people who literally don't have a pot to piss in and claimes he will cure whatever ails them. In the meantime, he has several mansions all over the world and he probably couldn't even cure a runny nose.

Instead Maher gives us the Jesus character, who actually seems like a decent human being and had intelligent things to say and we have to sit there and watch Maher talk to him with that smirk he so often has on his face. Show us some of the people who have probably been taken for their life savings by these religious nuts. Go to the grassroots Bill. Instead, he seemed to pick on a handful of people who aren't even a twinkle in the eye of the problems that religion has caused for the world today.

Maher should have taken a lesson from Michael Moore. Moore is the master of going to the people and showing us the results of a GM plant closing, the pain caused by the Iraq War or the suffering caused by a poor medical program. Moore pulls at the heartstrings. Maher simply reminded me of the douchebag who, in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks on the U.S., called the terrorists who flew the planes into the World Trade Center warriors. Nice Bill, real nice.
