Review (6.5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Hitch is the story of Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Will Smith), a professional relationship guru who secretly advises men from all walks of life and all shapes and sizes on how to meet the woman of their dreams. His latest project involves hooking up a rather stout, somewhat insecure and very uncoordinated fellow named Albert (Kevin James) with his lust for an ultra-rich and very beautiful dream girl named Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). At the same time, Hitch has found himself falling for a beautiful gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) and soon finds himself becoming the bumbling idiot that he so often mentors. What follows is a movie that, despite being fairly formulatic, still manages to generate a handful of humourous moments and in the end is a good "date movie" with some excellent tips for all you single fellas out there.

Although I didn't love this movie, I have to admit it did have many funny moments. Most of the scenes involving Will Smith and Kevin James worked quite well - particularly their dance bit. That scene alone should leave most viewers rolling in the aisle of doing the Q-tip! Smith and James had great chemistry and probably saved this movie from being a total disaster.

The two main stories of the movie - the Hitch/Sara love affair and Albert's pursuit of his dream girl were okay. They didn't have the chemistry of Hitch and Albert but they were okay. I have to admit, Hitch's pick-up lines and his whole courting process involving Sara were spectacular, although somewhat implausible. I have my doubts as to whether any of those lines would actually work. Nevertheless, if you are a single dude looking to impress some chick, bring a paper and pen with you to this movie. There are definitely some good tips to be had.

Despite the fact that Hitch has its moments of humour, some great "single people" moments, likeable characters and good chemistry between Smith and James, it is nothing more that a passable date movie that is somewhat forgettable. I liked Hitch but really have no inkling to ever see it again. It might be worth checking out those dance scenes again or grabbing a couple of Hitch's pick-up lines but don't expect anything ground-breaking. Despite being promising at times, Hitch is predictable, mildly entertaining and perhaps slightly above average. Nothing more, nothing less.
