Open Season
Review (7/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Open Season is yet another animated feature, this time brought to us for the first time by Sony Pictures Animation. I'm not sure why that's important to me but I remember reading it somewhere. I'm sure it means something to someone. Anyways, the movie (like many before it) focuses on some animals on a trek through unchartered territory. (See Shrek, Ice Age and Madagascar for further reference.) This time around we have Boog (Martin Lawrence), a domesticated grizzly bear who lives a life of luxury with his owner Beth (Debra Messing). Boog watches Wheel of Fortune, sleeps with pillows, uses toilet paper and has a stuffed toy. One day while in town, Boog happens upon Elliot (Ashton Kutcher), a one-horned deer who has been run down by Shaw (Gary Sinise) and is strapped to the hood of his car. Boog helps Elliot escape and, after a series of unfortunate events, the two are banished to the wilderness just as hunting season is about to begin. Boog is in no-man's land as he must deal with the unfamiliar landscape, men with guns, Scottish squirrels armed with deadly acorns and a lack of plumbing facilities. With Elliot at his side, nothing is sure to come easy for the troublesome duo.

Despite the fact that Open Season doesn't have a whole lot of originality and seems to vaguely recycle many of the jokes and characters that we have seen in so many animated movies over the last several years, it is still a perfect movie for the kiddies and really, not a bad movie for adults with a sense of humor. The characters are likeable, the story is decent, the movie is clean and it barely runs 90 minutes, which is the perfect length for this type of movie. There is one "poop" joke but it was actually kind of funny. At least I laughed out loud.

Despite it's real lack of originality, Open Season is still a movie that should entertain its target audience - kids and fans of animated movies. It's got a few hearty laughs and if anything, at least the squirrels will give you a good chuckle.
