Life As We Know It

Review (7.5/10)
(By Rayna)

Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl) is an obsessive compulsive control maniac aspiring to expand her fledgling catering business. Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) is a relaxed charmer and a promising network sports director. After a catastrophic first date, the only thing these two have in common is their strong discontent for one another and their love for their goddaughter, Sophie. When their mutual best friends suddenly die in a car crash, Holly and Messer are informed that together they are named as guardians in the will and are forced to put their differences aside to co-parent the recently orphaned baby Sophie.

Finding the balance between career ambitions and competing social calendars, Holly and Eric must work together to find common ground. When Holly starts dating Sophie’s pediatrician, Sam (Josh Lucas), Eric discovers that he has developed feelings for Holly. So, when Eric is offered a promotional position as a broadcaster in a control operating room with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and he must decide between life as a bachelor and fatherhood.

I found the movie added nothing new to the romantic comedy genre, although the characters had somewhat believable chemistry in an “opposites attract” type setting while the two adapted to the role of parenthood. Duhamel demonstrates sarcastic humour and definitely fits the role. Heigl has an appeal that is easy to like and she has a talent for smart, overly anxious characteristics.

Notwithstanding the fact that the movie has nothing different to offer and is highly similar to other romantic comedies with respect to predictability, both actors have star appeal, which sustains the film’s entertainment value. I suspect this film is not worthy of any awards but nonetheless it made for an enjoyable laugh and demonstrates “Life As We Know It” when raising a child.
