Perfect Stranger
Review (6/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Perfect Stranger stars Halle Berry as a nosey journalist who decides to use her investigative journalism skills to crack the unsolved murder of a young woman and former aquantaince. It seems her "friend" was murdered shortly after she met a powerful New York advertising executive (played by Bruce Willis) on the internet. Rowena (Berry), with the help of her friend Miles (Giovanni Ribisi), decides to go undercover as a temp at Harrison Hill's advertising firm in hopes of proving he killed Grace after she became too pushy and threatening about their illicit affair. What ensues is a suspense-filled cat-and-mouse game involving computer hacking, instant messaging, odd fetishes, Japanese food and a mother in the nut house.

Perfect Stranger has gotten a lot of flak, from what I have seen and heard, as one of the worst movies of all-time. I have to be honest, I really didn't mind this movie. Yeah, it's not going to re-write the history books as one of the best movies ever made, but I found it moderately entertaining and it sure had me guessing right up until the very end. I have to admit, I did not see the surprise coming. It might not have been the greatest ending in the history of movies but it sure got me. Did the movie drag at times? Yeah. Were the characters pretty much all unlikeable? Pretty much.

I guess in the end, if one of my buddies was asking me what I thought of the movie, I would tell him (or her) that it's not the best movie you're ever going to see but it's not the worst. It would be a decent rental or a good way to kill a couple of hours at the theatre if you don't have much to do. The ending has a decent twist (although they do the whole thing where one character has to explain every twist and turn and you're thinking, how the hell did they figure all that out?) and there is a little suspense thrown in. It's definitely one of those movies that I would suggest you proceed with caution, but if you're not all uptight about the movies you see and just kind of go with the flow, you might find Perfect Stranger to be somewhere between half-decent and mildly entertaining.
