The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Review (8.5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Steve Carell stars as Andy Stitzer, a 40-year old electronics store worker who has never had sex. He prefers to spend his well-organized time collecting toys, playing video games, reading comic books and riding his bike. That is until three of his co-workers discover that Andy has never had his knob polished and they make it their goal to get him laid. They each have their own way of coaching Andy in the technique of picking up women. They take him out to bars, to a speed-dating event, to get his hairy chest waxed and introduce him to various potential candidates to break Andy's 40-year slump. Eventually, Andy meets a lovely lady named Trish (Catherine Keener) and she becomes the focus of his sexual apocalypse.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a movie full of crude and rude humour. It has a lot of humour that I have, in the past, criticized. Racist jokes, sexual jokes, homophobic jokes, jokes against women. I have to say, there are times that jokes of this nature don't do it for me but with The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the buffoonery worked. I don't know if I have ever seen a movie in a theatre full of people that laughed from the very beginning to the very end. This movie just has joke after joke that hits.

Besides being hysterical, the movie is full of down-to-earth, likeable characters and relationships. Andy's three co-workers, played by Romany Malco, Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan are all outstanding in their respective roles. The way they sit around and talk reminds me of the way any four regular guys desperate to get laid would sit around and talk. It's pathetic but it's true.

Then there's Andy's relationship with Trish. Again, so real and so likeable. Maybe not as real as the banter between the four dudes in that I am not sure any warm-blooded male would agree to abstain from sex in a relationship but I guess under the circumstances I understand.

In the end, The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a movie that has heart and is definitely one of the funnier movies I have seen in quite some time. I thought the same of Wedding Crashers but as much as I loved Wedding Crashers, Virgin blows it out of the water. It's the kind of movie where you might feel guilty laughing at some of the jokes and you might cringe at others but it's worth every ounce of energy you will use laughing your ass off. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun watching someone not having sex.
