Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Review (8/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, we finally see the long-awaited return of Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann for more high seas, swash-buckling adventures in the haunted waters where only a ship like the Black Pearl can safely (but usually unsafely) navigate.

In this chapter of our heroes lives, Jack Sparrow is on the run from a rather odd-looking fellow named Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his army of equally bizarre slime balls. It seems that Sparrow owes a debt to Mr. Jones but if he gets his hands on something called the Dead Man's Chest, he can escape yet another dilemma and yet another curse. Of course, this is Jack Sparrow and as is often the case with Jack Sparrow, things do not go as smoothly as planned. And as usual, there are a handful of other side stories. Will and Elizabeth are to be imprisoned if they cannot turn Jack over to the British army. Bootstrap Bill Turner makes his long-awaited appearance. There's a big monster of some sorts that eats people. Just lots of fun on the high seas.

My initial feelings after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean 2 were rather mixed. I thought the movie was slightly hard to follow at times. The first half of the movie was okay, the second half was very good and the ending was fantastic. But after watching POTC2, I went home and re-watched POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl and it helped me make some sense out of a few things that happened in POTC2 and made me like both movies even more. I would recommend watching the first POTC movie before you go see POTC2 if you get a chance.

With all that being said and despite the sometimes confusing moments, what an entertaining movie. In many ways, it reminded me of The Empire Strikes Back. At least certain aspects of the movie. I won't really get into it but when you see POTC2, and if you are a fan of Star Wars, I'm sure you will understand what I am talking about.

What else is there to say. Well, we get to see yet another splendid performance from Johnny Depp in his reprisal of the role of the world's most famous and favourite pirate. Bill Nighy makes his piratorial debut with yet another strong performance, this time as the sadistic Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgard is introduced as the mysterious Bootstrap Bill Turner (Will's father). As expected, POTC2 has a great cast and superb performances from all actors and actresses from start to finish.

Overall, Dead Man's Chest is definitely a worthy sequel and perhaps the most entertaining summer blockbuster to hit the theatres this summer. It's not a perfect movie. As I said, it's a bit confusing at times but I'm not too sure if that had to do with the fact that I'm a dummy or if it was in fact a complicated story. That's for you to decide. Nevertheless, the second half of the movie is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat and the ending is one that you will not forget any time soon. It will leave you hungry for Pirates 3 - that I can promise you. If the only movie I saw every summer was a Pirates movie, I could die a fairly happy movie man. And in case you are wondering, I stayed right to the end of the credits and there is a small bit at the very, very end of the credits. Nothing significant but worth a chuckle.
