Seven Pounds

Review (8/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

"Seven Pounds" stars Will Smith as a guy who, for his own reasons, sets out to change the lives of seven people who fit a criteria that he has formulated. The movie also stars Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson and Barry Pepper, amongst others. Rosario Dawson looks so much like Angelina Jolie in the movie that my friend actually asked me if it was Jolie once the movie ended. Mind you, his comment also included the disclaimer, "I don't mean to ask a stupid question". He's not really up-to-date on the world of celebrities and Hollywood. But I will admit that there was more than one instance in the movie where Dawson looked eerily like Brangelina.

As for a detailed analysis of the plot of Seven Pounds, I think what I have said above is all I'm prepared to say for the time being. I went into this movie not really knowing what it was about and it probably added to my overall enjoyment. It's one of those movies where the less you know is a good thing. You will probably spend a large part of the movie wondering what is happening and why it is happening and that's not a bad thing. It doesn't take that long to figure out the basic premise but the method to the madness is definitely confusing at times. Anyone who tells you they were able to figure out "Seven Pounds" at the beginning of the movie is lying. It has some twists and turns that are sure to surprise even the most seasoned movie-goer.

With all that being said, is "Seven Pounds" a good movie? I think so. I'm afraid it's not a good enough movie to earn Will Smith the Oscar that he seems to so desperately desire, but it's a good movie nonetheless. Maybe not the most cheerful movie you will see in 2008 (or early 2009) and given the time of year that it's hitting the theatres, it probably won't be the festive movie that will bring joy to the world during the holiday season. But it's a good movie nonetheless. It's a movie about fate, about respectable people who deserve a break in life and about someone who is willing to help these people get that break.

"Seven Pounds" is one of those movies that will probably be better on a second viewing. It's good to watch it once without really knowing a lot about the story and then watching it again with a full understaning of what is happening. It is a movie that is sure to touch your soul and make you think of your place on this earth, about fate and about the situation of others. It may bring a tear to your eye but at the same time put a smile on your face. Overall, "Seven Pounds" is a very solid movie. It's kind of hard to believe that this is the same man who played "Hancock" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". One day that Oscar will come Mr. Smith. One day.
