The Matrix Reloaded
Review (8/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

The Matrix was probably one of the most well-received movies in the world of the philosopher and the computer geek alike in the last twenty years. It generated debate, explanations, and from what I now understand almost a new religion. (Did you know that more people in Europe claim their religion to be Jedi than Jewish?!?) Expect the same from The Matrix Reloaded. How do I know this? Well, there were long stretches in the movie where I did not know what the hell was going on. And there will be people in the world who watch the movie and understand the movie, or at least believe they understand the movie, and they will want the world to know this. They will post on websites. They will call in on talk shows. They will take to the streets and preach the words of Morpheus. Okay, maybe I am getting carried away. Or am I?

Don't get me wrong, the movie is more straight forward than not, but when Morpheus, the Oracle, the Architect and a few others start going into these long explanations about cause and effect, belief and non-belief, reality and non-reality, purpose and blah blah blah, I often found myself either tuning out or thinking of Carrie-Anne Moss naked. Perhaps The Matrix Reloaded is required to be so philosophical, so confusing, in order to keep its cult-like following on its toes.

The basic premise of the movie is easily explained. The Machines are on their way to destroy Zion. They are less than 36 hours away and the Christ-like Neo, his mentor Morpheus, the always beautiful Trinity, boxer Roy Jones Jr. and the rest of the crew must stop them. Of course there are several complications along the way. There is a Keymaker that must be saved. The Twins are introduced and seem almost unstoppable. (Nice job on The Twins by the way. Very cool characters indeed.) And then there is Agent Smith, who is still pissed at Neo and now has the ability to clone himself. The bastard just won't go away. The Matrix Reloaded has several outstanding fight scenes. There is a car/motorcycle chase that will leave you on the edge of your seat. And there is the obligatory ass shot - who's ass it is, well, you will just have to see the movie.

I have to say that overall, I really liked The Matrix Reloaded. From start to end, it was exciting and although I did get lost a couple of times, those of you who know me should not be surprised. Mind you, I did not go into this movie with the high expectations that half of the civilized world will. I liked the original Matrix but did not change my life after the movie. There are people who will be disappointed by The Matrix Reloaded. The one thing I did find is that it was not a huge step up from the first movie. It was by no means worse than the original. But worst-case scenario, it is at least as good and that was good enough for me.
