Children of Men
Review (9/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Children of Men takes us to the year 2027, a time when the world is in chaos. It is littered with detention centres and guarded fences, and a baby has not been born in 18 years. In an era where there seems to be little, if any hope, we meet Theo (Clive Owen), a disillusioned former activist whose life is more or less on auto-pilot. Theo goes to work, drinks too much booze (or not enough, I suppose, depending on how you look at it) and hangs out with his pot-smoking, music-loving friend Jasper (Michael Caine). Life is grey and the days are grim but Theo's world is about to be turned upside down.

When Theo is contacted by his ex-wife Jules (Julianne Moore), she asks him to help her get some transit papers for a young woman named Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey). Jules and her outlaw gang known as "The Fishes" hope to transfer Kee to a mysterious organization called "The Human Project", a mission that has a lot more at stake than Theo could have ever imagined. In a world with no children and no hope of there ever being a newborn, the miracle woman, Kee, is on the verge of having a baby. With the fate of humanity on the line, Theo takes Kee under his wing and with various militants, the army, the police and a whole lot of other people with guns hotly in pursuit, he is absolutely determined to bring Kee and her baby to safety.

In Children of Men, director Alfonso Cuaron has made one of the most thrilling, emotional, dramatic, intense and quite frankly, brilliant movies of the year. Rarely does a moment pass when you are not on the edge of your seat or glued to the screen. Whether it be a harrowing escape from a secluded farmhouse or an agonizing pursuit through a full-scale war zone, Children of Men is sure to leave your heart pounding and your knees shaking. This movie is superbly acted, filmed, written and directed. Much of the choreography in the movie is simply mind-boggling. It is surely one of the darkest movies of the year although Michael Caine does provide some comic relief. Even his laughs are few and far between.

I cannot say enough good things about Children of Men except to suggest you to see this movie and see it now. Perhaps the one thing I have not mentioned? The movie is just over 1 1/2 hours long. Surprising what you can accomplish in 100 minutes with a tight, well-filmed story. Take note The Good Shepherd - we do not always need 160 minutes of film to tell a story.
