The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Review (9/10)
(By Sean Cullin)

It was probably one of the most anticipated movies of all time. Next to the new Star Wars trilogy, I can't think of anything else that had this much hype and worry behind it. Everyone seemed to have an opinion of the film. Of course, I can only be talking about The Lord of the Rings. After taking 2 years and $300 million to film all three movies simultaneously, it is no wonder that The Fellowship of the Ring was the most anticipated movie of 2001.

I was really torn as to whether I should have read the books before seeing this movie. The Tolkien classics have been around for years, and I didn't want to seem like one of these bandwagoners just reading them because it is chic before the film opens. Plus, as everyone knows, the book is always better. I've experienced this many times myself, Silence of the Lambs-good/Hannibal-not as good, Kiss the Girls-good/Along Came a Spider-not that good. Important lesson here, always see the movie first!!! So I tried reading The Hobbit, LOTR's prequel if you would, but I found it really boring. Can anyone tell me if it gets better after the first 25 pages!!

Anyway, back to the movie. The Fellowship of the Ring goes down in my top 5 of 2001. There were a couple times that I didn't know what was happening and reading the books would have helped, but my trusty sidekick (who read them all a while ago and loves them) provided the necessary explanations. Other than this, it was fantastic. The story was great, I really liked the explanation of the Ring's lore at the beginning. The ending was great too, I loved the fight scenes with the Orcs, and it leaves the audience wanting more, I can't wait for the next edition in 12 months. The special effects were great too in my opinion, although I have heard others say they think they were "second rate".

I thought the real find of the movie was Viggo Mortensen. I have been hyping this guy for years, ever since I saw him in Crimson Tide. I think he is finally getting his recognition as one of Hollywood's special talents. And find me a person who doesn't think Aragorn is the best character in the Fellowship. The most annoying person has to be Samwise Gamgee, played by Sean Astin. He really bugged me. It bugged me even more that I did a LOTR personality test, and I was determined to be Samwise!!!

The Fellowship of the Ring also has a very important message at its core - even though you might be dealt a sucky hand in your current situation in life, you have to go on and deal with things and know that everything happens for a reason. It would make a good New Year's resolution for a lot of complainers out there, with me heading the list. So I say, no matter if you have or have not read the book, go see this movie. It is a bright light on and otherwise uneventful movie year.
