Comic Con: "Riddick" and "Kick-Ass 2"

Universal Pictures held their panel at San Diego Comic Con yesterday where their late Summer/early Fall releases "Riddick" and "Kick-Ass 2" were showcased.

Actors Aaron Taylor Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lindy Booth, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo and director Jeff Wadlow were on hand to talk about how dark and intense the upcoming "Kick Ass" sequel is, though it doesn't include the darkest scenes of the comic (the dog killing and rape scenes).

Chloe Grace Moretz also appeared via satellite and spoke about her character arc, while talk of a third film was quashed as those involved sound like they are so exhausted from the shoot they can't consider it at this point.

Taylor-Johnson also briefly spoke about his role of Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver in "The Avengers 2:

"I don’t think I can talk about that, but it really is an exciting prospect. [QuickSilver] has a really interesting character and background. In fact, my wife just went out and bought… it’s like a really, really old vintage [comic] with the first time Quicksilver’s ever been on the cover.

The second half of the panel dealt with "Riddick" as filmmaker David Twohy, actress Katee Sackhoff and some guy named Vin Diesel showed up to talk about this third film with the anti-hero character first seen in 2000's "Pitch Black".

The trio talked about the making of this essentially independently produced and financed production which Universal is distributing. Twohy and Diesel threw around various ideas before settling on a survival story. Twohy then penned a spec script which they took to the film markets and scored financing through a bunch of international deals.

"Riddick" reportedly still serves the mythology of the previous two films, but style and tone wise is much more akin to "Pitch Black" and the lower budget allowed them to keep the R rating.

The topic of Diesel's meeting with Marvel Studios came up to which he responded: "There is some very big news coming at the end of this month."
