"The Conjuring" Is A Critical & Commercial Hit

James Wan's supernatural thriller "The Conjuring" was a massive hit at the box-office over the weekend.

Shot for a mere $20 million, the film debuted with $41.5 million at the U.S. domestic box-office and garnered some quite positive reviews along the way.

That debut was better than five of this Summer's big-budget tentpoles, and easily topped the various other newcomers including Universal's disastrous "R.I.P.D.".

That film, which cost $130 million to make, opened to a dismal $12.8 million and seventh place. In a summer which has seen a few high profile flops, "R.I.P.D." may very well be amongst the biggest money losers of the season.

"R.I.P.D." star Ryan Reynolds had a double whammy at the box-office this weekend. Reynolds voices the lead in Dreamworks Animation's $135 million budget "Turbo" which opened in third place to $21.5 million - the worst opening for a Dreamworks animated film in over seven years.

Also out on Friday was the sequel to the geriatric spy action comedy "RED" which garnered both weaker reviews and box-office than its predecessor, opening to $18.5 million (the original opened with $21 million) and fifth place.

Horror films have generally avoided the Summer blockbuster movie period, yet the considerable success of low-budget films like "The Purge" and "The Conjuring" show that there's definitely an audience for it.
