Neil Blomkamp Talks About "Halo" & "District 9"

Filmmaker Neil Blomkamp says that if it weren't for the collapse of the film adaptation of the "Halo" video game series several years ago, he would not have been able to make "District 9".

Talking with The LA Times, Blomkamp says it was the efforts of producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh that made D9 possible. The pair were set to produce "Halo," but when that film collapsed they helped Blomkamp find financing for the $30 million "District 9," a film that no studio was interested in.

The result was one of the most profitable and acclaimed films of 2009. Blomkamp says: "The luck is the fact that Peter and Fran let me make ['District 9'] out of the ruins that were 'Halo'. What happened out of that was learning to trust my ideas. If 'Halo' had come out and succeeded or failed, I wouldn't have learned that."

Following that film's success, the filmmaker was offered various big-budget franchise films. He's turned them down though, saying: "It’s getting to the point now where WME [his agency] just doesn’t send me stuff anymore. It’s not because I think I’m better than any of that stuff. There are many franchises out there I would love to participate in. The problem is when you agree to do that, you take a lot of the control that you have over your own creative destiny away from yourself."

Blomkamp's new film, "Elysium," hits cinemas on Friday.
