Joss Whedon, Clark Gregg Talk The "S.H.I.E.L.D." Series

Joss Whedon and actors Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen appeared at the Television Critics Association panel for ABC's "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." over the weekend.

With a little over a month to go before the show goes to air, the trio spoke about the challenges of adapting the Marvel Universe for the small screen. One thing they had to keep in mind was how much the series will tie in with the various films.

Whedon says: "As much as we can allow. We’re still working that out. It’s a fluid process. The important thing is it’s a fun option, but it’s not the reason for the show. We don’t want to just be an Easter egg farm. We want them to come back for these people [the cast]." He added that the show must work for people who either have or haven't seen the films.

Asked what attracted him to the characters here, Whedon says: "It's about the people who didn't get the hammer, and the idea that everybody matters. The people who get shunted aside in the movies now get to take the spotlight. The show is very much about that sense of, 'What about the rest of us? How do we cope with a world that now has aliens and gods?"

He confirms that there will be an "overarching mythology" across the episodes and interweaved through standalone episodes. They deliberately don't want to fall into the pattern of a "new hero of the week" formula, rather they will shake things up where possible.

One concern is budget - will the pilot be an expensive one-off ahead of various bottle episodes later on? Apparently not. The pilot is "not as expensive as it looks," and in fact the second episode is even bigger. They will also set scenes in different locations around the world - some trips will be real location shooting, others will be done via digital trickery.
