"Gravity" Gets $55 Million

Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" exceeded expectations to open to $55.6 million domestically this weekend, along with an additional $27.4 million from 27 overseas markets.

That $55M is the largest October opening weekend of all time, the largest IMAX opening in October, the largest openings ever for Bullock and Clooney, and the second largest for Cuaron.

The film's 3D showings exceeded all expectations and made up 70% of the film's grosses. It also stands as easily one of the best reviewed films of 2013, which has led to talk of Oscar potential in categories like Best Picture, Actress, Director and technical awards.

In comparison, the other newcomer this week was "Runner Runner" which took a rather woeful $7.8 million in third place. The Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake starrer scored dismal reviews from both critics and in audience polls. With a sub-$30 million budget and a $23.6 million overseas gross this weekend, the film will still end up slightly in the black.
