Dark Water
Review (4.5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

Dark Water stars the beautiful Jennifer Connelly as Dahlia Williams, a single mother caught up in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband Kyle (Dougray Scott). Desperate to find an affordable apartment close to New York City, Dhalia's search takes her across the river to Roosevelt Island, where a sneaky building manager named Mr. Murphy (John C. Reilly) convinces Dhalia to move her and her young daughter Ceci (Ariel Gade) into the dark, dank, rundown building. Soon after Dhalia and Ceci move in, strange things start happening. There's water dripping in the elevator, water from the taps turning strange colours, water flooding the apartment above them, a big, dark water stain in their bedroom - lots of odd occurences tied to water. As for the non-water oddities, Ceci starts staring at the water stains and makes a mysterious imaginery friend who seems to be very demanding. Dark Water also stars the likes of Pete Postlethwaite as the creepy building superintendant Veech and Tim Roth as Dhalia's lawyer Jeff Platzer.

Dark Water is not the movie I was expecting. Maybe I misread the publicity campaign but I was expecting a horror movie. Dark Water is never scary. The whole movie seems to be buidling and building but never pays off. Okay, that may not be entirely true because I did like the last ten or fifteen minutes of the movie but the first three-quarters of Dark Water is so bland I'm afraid nothing could have saved this movie for me. I just never found myself excited by the dripping water, Ceci staring at the wet spots and an imaginary friend who just seems to want to sing lullabies.

It's really too bad because Dark Water has a great cast from top to bottom and the absolutely stunning Jennifer Connelly who has officially shot to the top of my "Hottest Woman in the World" list. The movie looks great and it's got a really eerie mood to it, but I really felt I kept waiting and waiting for something to happen and even though the ending is surprising and dramatic, it was all too little too late. There were just too many boring dripping water moments and not enough dripping blood moments. Maybe that sounds sadistic but something had to happen and it almost never did.

Perhaps if I didn't go into Dark Water expecting some cheap scares I might have felt differently. But I know I am not crazy. I know Dark Water was promoted as a scary movie. I know Dark Water is yet another attempt at an American remake of a Japanese horror hit. Unfortunately, like some of its predecessors (The Grudge and The Ring Two), Dark Water fails in the "scares" department. Overall, it's a very underwhelming movie.
