Alien vs. Predator
Review (6.5/10)
(By Brendan Cullin)

In Alien vs. Predator, Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) assembles an elite group of scientists, archeologists, ice climbers and other people with guns to investigate a mysterious pyramid that has been discovered hundreds of miles under the ice in Antarctica. What Weyland and his crew don't realize is that they are walking into a battle ground that has been used for hundreds of years by Predators to breed and hunt down Aliens. They do this to "earn their stripes" as a Predator, if you will. They also don't realize that pretty much everyone that decides to mosey on down to the pyramid has a less than 5% chance of coming back up to the surface - at least alive!

I have to say I went into Alien vs. Predator with very little in terms of expectations. I am a fan of both movie series and was somewhat concerned when the movie was not even screened for the media here in Toronto but to tell you the truth, I did not find the movie all that bad. Don't get me wrong, it had its problems - a pretty weak plot, terrible dialogue, bad acting, a partnership that was pretty damn ridiculous and a hot chick standing in the middle of Antarctica with nothing more than a tight t-shirt and her enormous bosum to keep her warm and not even so much as one goose bump on her body. I mean some of the stuff they put in this movie bordered on assinine. And I just love how these archeologists can just walk into a room that has been hidden for mankind for thousands of years and just stand in the middle of the room and figure out the history of the world by looking at a few ancient words scribbled on the wall. But despite the plot holes and all the silliness, I really did find myself half-assed entertained during the movie. First of all, the monsters looked great in every last scene they were in. I loved the battles between the predators and the aliens. I loved the mild form of tension that was created as we waited for something to eventually happen (which by the way, took way too long). I basically just had fun during the movie. It's not a great movie but it is somewhat entertaining. Mind you, there were a couple of things that happened that just outright pissed me off but I will not go into those for fear of ruining anything for anyone.

Overall, I will say this about Alien vs. Predator. It is not a great movie. It has so many problems that I could write an 800-page book just talking about that. It is a movie that is going to piss a lot of people off, especially the hardcore Alien and Predator freaks, who are sure to feel ripped off by the movie. And it tries painfully hard to hide any type of violence or gore to protect its precious PG-13 rating, which was extremely annoying and disappointing throughout the movie. But if you dare to walk into the theatre with an open mind and not worry about the details of the movie, it is quite possible that you may find yourself having a good time for the hour and a half that the movie runs. I actually found myself enjoying Alien vs. Predator much more than I did during Freddy vs. Jason. Trust me on this one. Alien vs. Predator is not as bad as I am sure you have read or heard. I even caught one guy today trashing the movie and he hadn't even bothered seeing it. The movie is just getting that sort of bad publicity. But the ironic thing is that it really isn't all that bad.
