…or at least for 95 minutes

That is the tag line used to describe You Again, a comedy starring Kristen Bell, Odette Yustman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver and “It” girl of the year Betty White. The movie starts off with a look back at Marni Olivia Olsen’s (Bell) awkward high school career and the bullying perpetrated upon her by the most popular girl in school J.J. (Yustman). Fast forward eight years and Marni’s older brother is about to marry said bully! As you can imagine it then becomes Marni’s mission to expose her brother’s fiancee’s true colours. To add another layer to the situation it just so happens that Marni’s mother Gail (Curtis) and J.J.’s aunt Mona (Weaver), have a past just as complex as Marni and J.J.’s. Of course the rest of the movie’s cast is completely unaware of all that is going on except for grandma Bunny (White) who is hilarious and will have you laughing in her random references to Twitter and all things generation Y.

The antics to which all four women resort in order to expose and torment the other is pretty funny and Weaver and Curtis play off each other very well keeping the audience laughing for most of the movie. Also keep an eye out for Victor Garber, Patrick Duffy, Kristen Chenoweth and Cloris Leachman who provide plenty of laughs in their respective roles.

However, the problem with You Again is that, unlike any bullied vs. bullier situation I’ve ever seen (in real life or in the movies), the ending left me unimpressed. Seems everyone wants to see a story that is neatly wrapped up and solved in 95 minutes. Perhaps I am used to the classics (think John Hughes) where the underdog triumphs and the popular kid is put in his/her place and karma is executed appropriately. The classics where everyone could identify with aspects of the protagonists and cheered for them to win. The fact that years of torment are forgiven in a 4-day span is just plain disappointing.

The laughs endure for the first 3/4 of the movie but when everyone starts to forgive everyone else and it turns into one big love fest the laughs simply stop. Altogether this is not a terrible movie, but a different ending might have made me care more.
